day of the initial trip had us wondering if central KS would be in play.
Initially headed west along I-70 to Wakeeney, but eventually gave up on this
play as outflow from decaying eastern KS MCS was skunking the instability. So,
we made a quick play for a forecast loan supercell to materialize near Kim, CO.
Indeed, this occurred and we latched onto it east of Springfield. Took a bit of
time, but eventually, the storm put on a nice structure show. Followed it east,
but eventually gave up due to forward speed near Liberal, KS. Shot some
lightning/structure from the north as the storm raced east, before heading to
Dodge City for the night (log by <i>WSA</i>).</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ygLXcWQYjd8/YJUv9PePajI/AAAAAAAAGRw/UBBIMqB5O48gKeyNgo6S9W9-n9mpXMk5QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2455.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ygLXcWQYjd8/YJUv9PePajI/AAAAAAAAGRw/UBBIMqB5O48gKeyNgo6S9W9-n9mpXMk5QCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_2455.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9_BMbTXksEY/YJUv9J9SYAI/AAAAAAAAGRo/S07gfdKHg_Mh0qQHqQ2_HbTNYbU9ubMgQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2926.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9_BMbTXksEY/YJUv9J9SYAI/AAAAAAAAGRo/S07gfdKHg_Mh0qQHqQ2_HbTNYbU9ubMgQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_2926.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MLm3E5W9VuI/YJUv9HhRpSI/AAAAAAAAGRs/DkBjag_J6zgLGJXnilLYrVRUrZRFXlFxwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2958.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1250" data-original-width="1600" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MLm3E5W9VuI/YJUv9HhRpSI/AAAAAAAAGRs/DkBjag_J6zgLGJXnilLYrVRUrZRFXlFxwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h500/IMG_2958.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ztz1GXsLTV0/YJUv9ec2rQI/AAAAAAAAGR0/kZeAKBMRZjQMM5LwB2tapCe_V14_pl3egCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2961.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1106" data-original-width="1600" height="442" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ztz1GXsLTV0/YJUv9ec2rQI/AAAAAAAAGR0/kZeAKBMRZjQMM5LwB2tapCe_V14_pl3egCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h442/IMG_2961.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GQ8jwZBMhgU/YJkvsImOOsI/AAAAAAAAGVg/ik1lSPiAqJstgNDDcrNZb506TwZ1nPXpACLcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="825" data-original-width="914" height="577" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GQ8jwZBMhgU/YJkvsImOOsI/AAAAAAAAGVg/ik1lSPiAqJstgNDDcrNZb506TwZ1nPXpACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h577/image.png" width="640" /></a></div></span></div><p></p>Dr. Victor Gensinihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889188051626973011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588935356966337880.post-92025469010333283472020-05-21T23:30:00.002-05:002021-05-10T08:08:58.580-05:005/21/2020 Moscow-Liberal, KS supercells<p style="text-align: justify;"><span face="Calibri, sans-serif" style="font-size: 11pt;"><a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/archive/2020/day1otlk_20200521_1630.html" target="_blank">Broad brush slight risk</a> in western Kansas with retrograding
surface low and convection near triple point. We initially targeted the area
near Syracuse, but after watching new towers and concerned about cluster
forming, we turned our eyes south. Watched an LPish storm near Syracuse, but it
struggled. Blew if off after looking continually at the NSSL WOF system, which was
giving high probabilities of an isolated storm forming further south. Sure
enough a storm formed near Liberal. We targeted this area, which was over an
hour away. It kept pulsing, and, in fact, we stopped going south for a bit.
Once it picked back up, and noticing the undesirable cluster and mess of
chasers to the northwest, we pushed south to the storm. Once we got northeast
of Liberal, we got to watch a nice LP structure slowly lift north for well over
an hour. A new storm formed rear of the LP and began to take on a nice
supercell structure visually and via radar. We let the LP go and gunned for
this storm just south of Moscow. Routed under the meso and then jumped east for
what was a long-lived structure fest in the waning light. Overnighted in
Liberal, KS (log by <i>WSA</i>).</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0aUySeXlQ4E/YJUr1_haujI/AAAAAAAAGRg/ApnbeGpq6NkcZsEcLe9bmfuUyTtcTiYpQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_0041_2_3_4_5_fused-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1070" data-original-width="1600" height="428" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0aUySeXlQ4E/YJUr1_haujI/AAAAAAAAGRg/ApnbeGpq6NkcZsEcLe9bmfuUyTtcTiYpQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h428/IMG_0041_2_3_4_5_fused-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3d4UsyWbxYg/YJUrhRQ91DI/AAAAAAAAGRM/Lp1xkK7vh8QuA5asg7KiQbFvM_xgbmG_gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_1316.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3d4UsyWbxYg/YJUrhRQ91DI/AAAAAAAAGRM/Lp1xkK7vh8QuA5asg7KiQbFvM_xgbmG_gCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_1316.jpg" width="640" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grMfgYidZ4U/YJUrhSU1HXI/AAAAAAAAGRQ/Cql5B4ZDZS4_z7Q47Mn6DgaqGRXtql5IgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_0135.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grMfgYidZ4U/YJUrhSU1HXI/AAAAAAAAGRQ/Cql5B4ZDZS4_z7Q47Mn6DgaqGRXtql5IgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_0135.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_HWDHLZbGDQ/YJUrhYs8R1I/AAAAAAAAGRI/pD6Fj2CaoC06eUhXAAaootcDv5sFGrdDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_0184.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_HWDHLZbGDQ/YJUrhYs8R1I/AAAAAAAAGRI/pD6Fj2CaoC06eUhXAAaootcDv5sFGrdDQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_0184.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J1KZZ76WN30/YJkwYKs6rDI/AAAAAAAAGVo/fJbiiACr6J0qYBaWhQgb_ZeEyXOKRcQlQCLcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="710" height="505" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J1KZZ76WN30/YJkwYKs6rDI/AAAAAAAAGVo/fJbiiACr6J0qYBaWhQgb_ZeEyXOKRcQlQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h505/image.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><br /><span face="Calibri, sans-serif" style="font-size: 11pt;"><br /></span><p></p>Dr. Victor Gensinihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889188051626973011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588935356966337880.post-81677993777626172832020-05-20T23:30:00.002-05:002021-05-10T08:11:24.466-05:005/20/2020 Raymer, CO perch<p style="text-align: justify;"><span face="Calibri, sans-serif" style="font-size: 11pt;">Unzipped

Targeted the area southeast of Raton, NM … somewhere near Abbot, NM. Waited a bit, and finally a cell formed near Raton and moved due south. New storm formed along southeast flank, and both supercells moved south if not even a bit southeast. We had trouble with photography due to lack of roads and our orientation/perspective on the storm. Finally made a play south and west, down into the canyon southwest of Roy, NM. A gamble that paid off as we were treated to a heck of a lightning show during sunset deep in the canyon as the supercell moved to our immediate west. Couldn’t track anymore due to lack of roads, so headed toward Las Vegas ,NM to overnight. A new supercell formed off to our south during the drive. We stopped about 30 minutes east of Las Vegas to take in the amazing lightning show from the backside of the supercell. Awoke in Burlington, CO and saw no need to leave given placement of a surface stationary boundary and localized maximum in surface vorticity along a line from Burlington to Bird City. Watched TCu from the hotel parking lot and could have seen the first high-based landspout tornado from our hotel room window! Watching from just south of the hotel, strong rotation aloft eventually connected to the surface and produced an interesting dust column a couple of miles or so to our west. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kszJJ8w_7uM/YJkgmzz26fI/AAAAAAAAGTI/tVpfRRfKjDormwfzHo4DK_sQQIWZW-C6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_6756.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="964" data-original-width="1600" height="386" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kszJJ8w_7uM/YJkgmzz26fI/AAAAAAAAGTI/tVpfRRfKjDormwfzHo4DK_sQQIWZW-C6ACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h386/IMG_6756.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2PJL916-crA/YJkgm-NsItI/AAAAAAAAGTM/QUtNRAY-ybE2ptk1ZhX4f4Zpg3YEuyeIQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_6761.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2PJL916-crA/YJkgm-NsItI/AAAAAAAAGTM/QUtNRAY-ybE2ptk1ZhX4f4Zpg3YEuyeIQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_6761.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>We held tight near the hotel as convection continued to fight a rather strong cap further the the east in the deeper moisture. After doubling back-and-forth along I-70, we pulled the eastbound trigger toward a rather rigorous looking updraft beginning to form near Goodland. The storm quickly became surface based and produced some of the best structure of 2019 in the matter of a couple hours. A brief anticyclonic tornado also emerged from what otherwise was a non-tornadic beast of a supercell (see third to last photo, lower-left near lightning bolt and grain bins). This was the last day of chasing in 2019 for me, and it was definitely a cash-in. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-21cidZHJpQ8/YJkkZTSUM5I/AAAAAAAAGUk/sZ6hnStoILs_FAPQfMaiGv-hHg6298efQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2892.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="1600" height="366" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-21cidZHJpQ8/YJkkZTSUM5I/AAAAAAAAGUk/sZ6hnStoILs_FAPQfMaiGv-hHg6298efQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h366/IMG_2892.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XyahZIcUSwA/YJkkZW_sScI/AAAAAAAAGUc/7s3adx64Ic4eQHoxmaRThqAVZ4S9c1T3QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2913.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XyahZIcUSwA/YJkkZW_sScI/AAAAAAAAGUc/7s3adx64Ic4eQHoxmaRThqAVZ4S9c1T3QCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_2913.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ycZ3faPelRg/YJkkZaU0bGI/AAAAAAAAGUg/SxSBn9LKwysVpBLiAWZuTQUWJaPpj-IWwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_2946.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ycZ3faPelRg/YJkkZaU0bGI/AAAAAAAAGUg/SxSBn9LKwysVpBLiAWZuTQUWJaPpj-IWwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_2946.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--IOQzTNElf0/YJkkZ_L6IoI/AAAAAAAAGUo/ckeDzc7w6C8vZ7IprUKH2NadFS49u_-ewCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7707.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--IOQzTNElf0/YJkkZ_L6IoI/AAAAAAAAGUo/ckeDzc7w6C8vZ7IprUKH2NadFS49u_-ewCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/IMG_7707.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W3wgFqQRhXY/YJkkaXKrSwI/AAAAAAAAGUs/15nklpzA0kExZCbd02wL1mZj1Wep2-rTQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7744.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1009" data-original-width="1600" height="404" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W3wgFqQRhXY/YJkkaXKrSwI/AAAAAAAAGUs/15nklpzA0kExZCbd02wL1mZj1Wep2-rTQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h404/IMG_7744.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vBnEgOzWRw4/YJktrm6eimI/AAAAAAAAGVA/AQg-g14kMQccCuJN9hQbc_9MHozG0Bx9QCLcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="978" height="517" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vBnEgOzWRw4/YJktrm6eimI/AAAAAAAAGVA/AQg-g14kMQccCuJN9hQbc_9MHozG0Bx9QCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h517/image.png" width="640" /></a></div></div>Dr. Victor Gensinihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889188051626973011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588935356966337880.post-82079341785578814862017-07-14T01:07:00.001-05:002017-07-14T10:19:36.508-05:007/11/2017 Mayville, ND HP Supercell and Tornado <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><b><i>(written by CoD Trip 5 assistant Evan Anderson w/ light editing)</i></b></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Morning analysis depicted much more zonal UL flow this day with main UL jet strung across the northern tier of the US. As such, this resulted in a SFC low, maintained by subtle transiting s/wvs, at the 3-corner region of ND/MB/SK. Pendant WF sloped SSE across MN with a CF arcing WSW across ND into MT with a pendant dry trough/pseudo-dryline that jut out due south near the Devil’s Lake-Jamestown area. The latter likely ending up as our main focus for CI. Ahead of this feature was a rich moisture holding tight across the Midwest that would be advected to the NW through the warm sector. We had confidence this would occur as morning WV revealed yet another subtle s/wv in MT that would likely result in some p-falls across the Dakotas, deepening the main synoptic low, allowing winds to respond. Starting in Fargo gave us plenty of time to diagnose the situation and after a lunch at Space Aliens Cafe, we made our way to Mayville to do our second and final balloon launch. Data revealed a fairly classic loaded gun sounding with some weakness to the low-midlevel SR winds, but otherwise exceptional parameter space </span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">environment despite a potential hazard type of Severe and only 1 weak tor analog and a several non-tor supercell analogs.</span></span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

CI occurred in a couple locations west of a line from Finley to Grafton shortly after our balloon launch had completed by 2100/2200Z, then arcing back toward the SFC low near the US/CN border. We navigated to Larimore and ended up being drawn north toward what was clearly at the time the strongest convection in close proximity to the better SErly sfc flow near the WF. However as we made our way north out of Larimore, convection filled in between a cell to our west and our target storm to our north near Grafton. A couple of these cells had even thrown off left splits that only further complicated navigation/cell interaction/nowcasting. Since we were under a 5% tor risk in GFK’s CWA…. Naturally and unfortunately – every – storm had a tornado warning, which only added to the confusion. By the time we finally cleared all other storm cores to get a view at the Grafton cell, the storm did not look impressive and nothing in the low levels on radar made us particularly hopeful. At this point we were considering pulling off for a secondary target and heading NW to intercept cells coming off the border. Only other option was to once again navigate storm/hail cores and blast back south toward a storm now at the southern edge of all the convection along the dry trough near Lairmore/Northwood. A short conversation with our most experienced nowcasters came back with a unanimous decision to get south. This ended up being a pivotal decision, not only because this ended up being the undeniable storm of the day… but the timing of our arrival was impeccable. We were able to get out ahead of the storm N of Mayville – W of Buxton while the storm was still exhibiting transient supercellular characteristics. But right as we made our first stop we started to see low level velocity data transition from less convergence to true azimuthal shear and </span></span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">the visual of storm absolutely confirmed that the storm was changing mode and becoming a true supercell.</span></span></div>

The tornado touched down initially with very little condensation funnel evident, just a swirl of debris under the cloud base, but then had several rapid moments of full condensation within the tornadic circulation before becoming fully rain wrapped. We stuck with the storm until Halstead, MN, before conceding that the storm was in full HP beast mode and there was little chance to see another tornado – instead opting to drop south away from the storm and take in the impressive mid-level updraft structure.</span></span></span></div>

After arriving at the hotel, our storm had drifted well to our SE and was putting on a decent lightning show, so a large chunk of our group that was still willing to head out in the vans dropped SE of the greater Moorehead/Fargo area and shot some lightning that was unfortunately slightly obscured by a mid-level stratocu deck...but still enjoyable.</span></div>

We (CoD Trip 5) launched our first weather balloon from Sauk Center, MN, before heading south towards and absolute explosion of an updraft near Olivia, MN. Turns out, this rapidly developing supercell became quickly HP, and mostly caused us a lot of frustration as we struggled to maneuver around to the southern flank. We did stick with the storm until late in the evening, where we documented a brief tornado and vivid lightning. </div>

Wednesday was just one of those days that will be hard to ever replicate. After a long afternoon/evening waiting for severe storms to develop in Norton, KS, we sat up shop just south of Beaver City, NE, to photograph convective towers and sunset. We were treated with nearly 5 1/2 hours of great skyscapes (e.g., sunlit towers, ACCUS @ sunset, continuous lightning, stars, Milky Way). We sat in the same spot (with only one car passing!) from 8:00 PM CDT to just after 1:30 AM CDT filling up memory cards with picture after picture for timelapse. We were definitely high on life! Another day I will never forget, and a great end to ACP 2017! </div>

Tuesday featured a <a href="http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/archive/2017/day1otlk_20170620_1630.html" target="_blank">targeted slight risk</a> of severe thunderstorms across west central Kansas. We were not expecting any tornado potential as the dewpoint depression values were well over 30 F by late afternoon, but severe weather did form in our target area east of Leoti, KS. We saw some great structure on a developing quasi-supercell that produced 2.75" hail in several locations throughout its lifecycle. Most of the photos below are from near Ulysses, KS, with the exception of the railroad shot (one of my favorites from this day). That picture was taken near Big Bow, KS. We also documented wave breaking with a left split moving toward our location. Walker's timelapse of this should be outstanding...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We went through Ulysses after the storms passed, and it was easy to see the vegetation damage and even a snapped power pole north of town. Another amazing day in America's heartland! </div>

We spent some time in the very cool town of Taos, NM before dipping through the Rio Grande River valley and crossing the Rio Grande pass bridge. A day filled with great scenery, friends, and itchy chigger bites!<br />

On Sunday we took the opportunity to visit <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture_Canyon_(Colorado)" target="_blank">Picture Canyon</a> (a small state park near Campo, CO) as we were passing through toward Trinidad. This location had some very neat pictographs and petroglyphs, They are believed to be artifacts from the Plains Indians (c. 1650). We then enjoyed a leisurely drive through the Raton Pass in northeast NM, stopping periodically to take in the sky. </div>

Saturday’s setup was another typical 2017 setup, with
outstanding instability but rather lackluster low-level wind shear. After
killing some time in Salina, we drifted north to rapidly developing towers
south of Junction City, KS. They had some good initial structure and were
throwing out copious positive CG bolts, but cold pools quickly consolidated
into a forward propagating MCS. We stayed ahead of the bow from Cosgrove to
Wichita, occasionally stopping for photos of the shelf and attempts at
lightning. <o:p></o:p></div>

Friday was one of those chase days that comes around only a handful of times per year. Awaking in Hutchinson, KS, we eyed a potential target of Norfolk, NE along a gently drifting density discontinuity. After waiting in the (nice) Albion, NE park, we shifted north to developing cumulus congestus northwest of Norfolk. The initial cell had a distinct lowering from rain cooled air being ingested from the forward flank. It continued to strengthen, and to our surprise, developed strong rotation and a brief tornado near Tilden, NE. Precipitation from a new cell to the west was too much to overcome though, and it was pretty clear from our perspective that the complex was becoming outflow dominant. We shifted to structure photography mode and began setting up for sunset and lightning opportunities. This really payed off, as we witnessed an absolutely spectacular lightning show just east of Fairmont, NE. This was a top 5 lightning show for me, filling up two 32GB memory cards with photos and timelapse images. As if it could not get any better, the sky was full of mammatus to our east, a pretty sunset to our west, and infinite numbers of fireflies dancing in the fields among us. A day I will never forget. Make sure to watch the timelapse until the end!<br />

Thursday was mostly a bust from a storm photography perspective (lackluster structure despite several severe and tornado warnings), so we grabbed a hotel in Hutchinson, KS ahead of a developing severe MCS. After this passed over us, we photographed some spectacular mammatus at sunset. However, we were at dinner and none of us had our DSLR cameras! A lesson to always have your camera by your side! At least cell phone cameras are pretty good these days...</div>

We (CoD Trip 3) awoke in Brush, CO, after an evening of pizza and fun. Morale was high as anticipation of this setup grew larger day-by-day. An anomalous environment, by high plains standards, was forecast to develop over the high terrain of CO and WY. Mid 60s F dewpoints and strong deep-layer shear was already present by late morning, so our crew launched a 1900 UTC sounding from Ft. Morgan, CO. Anticipation continued to build as we will filling the weather balloon, then all of a sudden, POP! The weather balloon had a small hole! We were literally deflated thinking that this was a sign of how the day was going to progress. Instead of giving up on the launch, we tried (and failed) with duck tape. Then, in a moment of genius, Leon suggested we pull the hole through a zip tie and turnicate the area of the balloon hole. It worked! The balloon filled just fine and we were able to obtain successful data to nearly 30,000 ft. Data also showed a strong capping inversion, which presented a problem since our group was already 1,000+ miles away from home and we needed to get back as this was the last day of our trip.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A developing supercell caught our eye near Ft. Collins, CO, and we were able to route south and east ahead of the cell after pulling off another logistical miracle (that story some other time!). As this cell tracked into northeast CO/southwest NE/southeast WY, it was occasionally tornadic. We saw a long lived tornado near Grover, CO, characterized by a Campo-esque debris cloud and slender stovepipe condensation funnel. After this tornado roped out, we jogged east on I-80 and then north out of Kimball, NE. We pulled over on a country road (near Grady Dixon and the Ft. Hays State group) and watched another short lived tornado. We witnessed two more brief tornadoes and some amazing structure while driving north on 71 before calling the chase due to logistics and decaying road network. Overall, a great day and amazing teamwork by our crew to pull this off. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think this day would have been <i>even better</i> if the early afternoon hodographs had a bit more low-level SRH. </div>

Supercell north of Kimball, NE as we made our approach</div>

This day featured a slight risk for severe storms across northern/central North Dakota. Awaking in Bismarck, we shifted north to Minot for lunch and a weather ballon launch. As expected, all ingredients were in play for tornadic supercells <b>except</b> moisture. Our sounding revealed large dewpoint depressions leading to relatively high LCLs (~700 mb). NOTE: It's likely that the LCLs were actually much lower than this, especially just along/north of a WNW to ESE oriented boundary from KMOT toward Rugby, ND. This agreed with what we were seeing visually with a developing supercell just east of Minot as bases were much lower than expected. Awaiting at a gas station in Towner, we moved slightly west for a better view of this maturing supercell. It had some nice classic structure and we even witnessed a brief tornado just after a RFD surge. However, deeply mixed convection also fired to the south and sent a cold pool northward toward our storm. By this time, though, our storm was already throwing up all over itself as the cold downdraft began to overtake the cell causing parcels to convect up and over the cold pool. The northward moving cold pool proved to be the nail in the coffin for our storm, even though it did try to recycle west of Devil's Lake. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We need to examine more ways to forecast thermodynamic and kinematic structures of the downdraft relative to the environmental buoyancy profile. Oh yeah, and moisture is important! </div>

Yesterday was the first exciting day for our group (CoD Trip
3 2017). We started the morning in Laramie, WY and then visited the Cheyenne
NWS office. Chad, Becca, and Rob gave us a nice tour of the office and talked
with our group about their roles/responsibilities. We grabbed lunch on Dell
Range Road before heading north toward Wheatland. We stayed patient along a
moisture discontinuity in the northwest NE panhandle, extending northwest to just
north of Lusk, WY. This payed off as a nice supercell developed north of Lusk
and began diving south given the weak upper-level shear (see RADAR animations).
This supercell had nice structure for most of its life and had one of the more impressive
hail cores I’ve ever seen. We stuck with this storm until it decayed just north
of Torrington, WY. <o:p></o:p><br />

Most of May has been slow from a storm chasing perspective, but a couple of juicy setups (on paper at least!; 1 ENH, 1 MDT, 1 HIGH) allowed Pops and I to get out to the Plains for our annual excursion. No tornadoes this trip, but we were able to photograph a couple beautiful supercells. It was a great trip with many laughs and memories. I'll be heading out to the Plains again with the CoD trip (June 1st - 11th), so stay tuned for more storm accounts! </div>

We (CoD Trip 5) rang in July with a nice day of storms in southeast CO. High dewpoints and a strengthening wind field excited us for tornado potential. Instead, convective morphology and lack of strong surface heading due to cloud cover really hampered the tornado potential. We targeted the Trinidad area initially for an early/quick tornado, but the winds/instability did not really materialize as hoped. We opted to move further east, where the lone meaty supercell of the day formed just northeast of Kim, CO. We watched it for a while (see timelapse) before it grew upscale into a large MSC and associated shelf cloud across southeast CO.</div>

We awoke in Scottsbluff, NE (new Fairfield Inn) with a target near Torrington, WY. Low 60s dewpoints were progged in the NE panhandle, and shear profiles quite supportive of supercell storms. We had lunch in Torrington at Deacon's before heading to a softball park to launch a radiosonde (data attached below). It was clear in our sounding that the moisture was shallow and dewpoints began to mix out to the mid/low 50s by late afternoon. We bailed on the upslope play to head toward Chadron to catch developing convection coming out of the southern Black Hills. This convection quickly grew upscale into a southward propagating MCS and will likely be classified as a derecho. We got a front row seat for the shelf as it passed through Chadron, where it produced a measured wind gust of 103 mph! Continuing its south track, we slid toward Alliance and caught a nice picture of the shelf as it passed over Carhenge. It was a great spot for a group shot! For the grand finale, we set up on the southwest side of near Lake McConaughy (near the damn; good idea Walker!) to let the shelf pass and overtake us. There were several boaters that were caught as this derecho passed over the lake. A great day in some beautiful country.</div>
